5 WAVES-Confronting and Healing Sibling Sexual Trauma

5WAVES is a collective voice promoting Worldwide Awareness, Voice, Education and Support around Sibling Sexual                        Trauma--child sexual abuse caused by a sibling. The founders of 5WAVES are five women in five different time zones,                      working to break through the dark shadows of a silent epidemic. As survivors and parents, they each found themselves                                                                          utterly alone for years and even  decades, as they faced the effects of sibling sexual trauma (SST) on their lives and families.                                                                    Sibling sexual trauma is real. It happens in all types of families. In fact, it is one of the most common forms of child sexual                                                                          abuse both in the US and worldwide.

I Feel Guilty, by Jane Epsetin

Though nothing can restore a stolen childhood, and nothing can reclaim lost innocence, I Feel Real Guilty is more than the raw, unfiltered tale of one woman wrestling with her demons. It's a call to arms, an invitation to survivors to speak out and reclaim their power. Epstein's story shines a spotlight on the secrets of sibling sexual abuse, providing a ray of hope and strength for those still trapped in their own private darkness.

Everyone Was Silent, by Diane Tarantini
body safety educator in public schools, child safety expert, author of the child safety book,
The Brave Knight, and sibling sexual abuse       survivor—tells her own story in order to:

support survivors of child sexual abuse, child on child sexual abuse, and sibling sexual abuse
  •  educate loved ones about the survivor experience
  •  provide resources to survivors and their loved ones, as well as educators and professionals who work with youth
  •  Introduce the concept of "sibling abuse," which can be physical, emotional, and/or sexual

The Brave Knight, by Diane Tarantini
Through a fairytale-like story, The Brave Knight
teaches kids about bullying and “grooming,” the process by which a sexual predator gains   the trust of a potential victim, and sometimes their family.
The Brave Knight uses bold illustrations and an exciting story about a girl, a dragon, and a brave knight with a shield to show young   readers what behaviors and language someone might use to persuade them to do things that are not okay. This book teaches your child   to use their voice and speak up when something in their world makes them uncomfortable, a skill that will serve them all their life.

The Invisible Key, by Maria Socolof
Competitive athlete turned scientist discovers the key to healing her chronic myofascial pain in this raw and gripping memoir.
An acute injury. Chronic pain. A shocking discovery. Maria Socolof, a former collegiate athlete, at age forty, ruptured a disc in her neck when she rolled over in bed. Time and conventional medicine failed to heal her. Years of debilitating pain followed. She sincerely questioned whether life in such pain was worth living. Then, through mindbody approaches and bewildering revelations, true healing finally began. Her raw chronicle attests to the impact emotional trauma can have on the body and how we can set ourselves free from the limitations of our subconscious. She went from being unable to stand for more than fifteen minutes to hiking in Alaska five years later. She shows us that one can heal, even when hope is lost.

One in Six: A Man's Guide to Overcoming Childhood Sexual Abuse, by Russell Stagg

Tens of millions of men are survivors of child sexual abuse. Studies by the CDC, NSPCC, and others show males experience sexual abuse at almost the same rate as females, and have mainly female perpetrators (principally mothers).
Licensed psychotherapist Russell Stagg explains that most survivors struggle with post-traumatic stress or PTSD (particularly complex PTSD), even if they don’t know it. Pointing out that most addicts and alcoholics have a history of child abuse, he then addresses addictions, including those to porn and sex. He acknowledges that survivors often end up in abusive relationships, and cites reputable studies showing men are about as likely to be domestic violence victims as women.
Tackling a long list of trauma-related problems, Russell teaches topics like anger management, assertiveness, and suicide prevention. He stresses the need for therapeutic support, listing the qualities of good therapists; then he describes how to deal with the frequently-                                                       encountered hostile therapists rushing to defend female child molesters.
At least one in six men has experienced sexual abuse—including the author. Russell’s book is the product of years of experience,                                                          addressing male survivors’ concerns with empathy and compassion.

The Shadows in My Heart, by Mary Havens
Big families cultivate chaos. Mary Havens knows this all too well. One of twelve children, she grew up on a picturesque Wisconsin dairy farm. Holidays, graduations, marriages, and newborns filled the farmhouse with the light of laughter and hugs. But for Mary, the unspoken eclipsed that light. Unresolved grief, abuse, religious dogma, and secrets left her in the shadows, lost and alone. Her profound story is one of determination, survival, and the ability to rise above the fray. It is a story that will be too familiar to some and unfamiliar to others, but will pull at the heartstrings of everyone. For any woman wondering how to find her way clear of a thicket of lies, Shadows in My Heart offers encouragement. And for any woman who celebrates having found her way free, this book is a captivating reminder of how far she has come. Honest and engaging, readers are the beneficiaries of Havens having found her voice in the storm.
